Question Set 3

With the posting of the third set of questions below, Phase One of the Artiject is nearing completion. Some of the original questions have been changed as a result of interesting issues and topics that were raised by a number of participants. As indicated previously, answer as many questions as you wish. In keeping with the contemplaspective nature of some of consciousness’s operations, there is no expectation that all answers be submitted at once. Participants are welcome to revisit previous question sets, as well their own responses or those of others. Discourse is encouraged. These questions can also serve as a starting point for free association and stream of consciousness. Feel free to introduce yourself in the Electronic Guest Book located towards the bottom of the blog page. The deadline for submitting responses for all three question sets is August 1st.

Cognition
1. What is your understanding of “style” and “idea,” and what does the term “underground” mean to you (character, aspect, practice, metaphors etc.)

2. Is there such a thing as aesthetic fundamentalism? If so, describe it.

3.Is recognition important in the "underground," and, if so, how is it different from mainstream recognition?

4. Describe your sound, your aesthetic?

5. What is your understanding of music and/or sound art as well as music-making and/or sonification?

6. In your social context(s), what role(s) do you think music and/or sound art and music-maker and/or sonifier perform?

7. In an ideal world, what would you do/ would be doing in the future (goals/plans/dreams etc.)?

Question Set 2

Below is the second set of questions. As stated previously, you may answer as many questions as you wish. As consciousness operates in a fluid manner, you need not submit your answers in one batch, and you may back track and visit or revisit the previous set of questions (or yours or someone else's responses) at anytime. Again, regard these questions as a point of departure rather than as the destination. Feel free, if you like, to introduce yourself in the SoundWok Electronic Guest Book towards the bottom of the page.

Creation
1. How do you create?

2. Where do you create?

3. What motivates and inspires you?

4. Do you remember the first moment(s)?

5. Can you imagine the unborn sound?

Questions Set 1

These questions are the first of three sets meant to be open and are subject to interpretations. Re-formulate the questions if necessary. Otherwise answer as much as you like, giving specific examples as appropriate. The second set of questions will appear on April 11th. If you like, you can introduce yourself in the SoundWok Electronic Guest Book towards the bottom of the page.

Experiences
1. What makes you listen/How do you listen/Why do you listen?

2. What are you listening to?

3. What do you hear?

4. How does your listening relate to the other senses and to consciousness (sight, smell, touch, taste and thought)

5. What do you hear when you read, when you write?

b) email us at soundwok@yahoo.com

We would much prefer the former method of communication and sharing but either way is fine: just "give it to us!"

Thanks for your contributions and participations, the 2nd and 3rd sets of questions will follow in time, in response to answers contributed.

SoundWok Participation

If you are a Southern California based or linked sound artist, experimental musician and/or composer, you are invited to participate in the first part of a unique sound art and music research artiject and study, conducted by Dr. Chung Shih Hoh and Marco Schindelmann that will involve the mapping of the dynamic social networks and aesthetic consciousness of Southern California artists involved in sound art and/or experimental music. The results of this study will also serve as material for a sound installation for SoundWalk 2008 (September 20th). Your participation in this project is not contingent on your submitting to or taking part in SoundWalk 2008.

A series of questions will be posted online to project participants on a blog (soundwok) and, if preferred, either through direct e-mails or in conjunction with your SoundWalk submission. The text that emerges as a result of your and other participant responses will be processed through a computer program for analysis, interpretation, and visualization so as to cull common themes, conceptual threads, foci, motifs and directed messages. In order to ensure confidentiality and anonymity, all information, collected during this part of the project, will be analyzed in aggregate. Although participant anonymity will be maintained with regard to the response-related data collected, all respondents will be recognized in connection with their participation in the project unless otherwise desired. If you choose to participate, you may withdraw at any time. Also, you may answer all questions posed or as many as you like.

After completion of this part of the study (August 8, 2008), presentations will be delivered publicly in arts and scholarly conferences, journals and arts events (e.g. SoundWalk 2008 [September 20, 2008]) that will serve, in part, to acknowledge you as part of a living community of creative beings (some of whom practice at the peripheries) as well as the ideas generated and the cultures to which you contribute, so as to bring them [community, ideas, cultures] to the attention of a greater intellectual and artistic community. If you have any questions previous to, during the course of , or subsequent to your participation in this project, do not hesitate to call (562 413 5868) or e-mail me (Marco_Schindelmann@redlands.edu).

If you wish to participate via e-mail please contact:

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

Our blog, SoundWok, is a reflective space where sound-artists and experimental musicians can gather to discuss their art, works and ideas. We as moderators will facilitate discussions and hope, through artistic documentations, to trace various developments as well as the origins of practices. Presentations will be delivered publicly in arts and scholarly conferences and journals that will serve, in part, to acknowledge this living community of creative beings, works and cultures.

What are we doing?

Following 4 years of SoundWalk, a sound-art event, in Long Beach, there is now a stable community of phonateers and sonifiers who have returned every year to the Long Beach nesting ground to hatch and develop new ideas in their art. While it is good to catch up with each other once a year during SoundWalk, we hope that by creating this blog, we could keep in touch throughout the year, interacting with each other, exchanging ideas, collaborating, and even changing the course of developments, amongst ourselves and beyond.

In short, we are building an interactive community
